EBook reader with wide-screen, and no lock-in?

What would be the best device for reading electronic books based on two criteria: 1) Good screen. Kindle I have seen for the first time live, but the screen is horrible. I currently use VGA PDA, I realize it will not be nearly as bright and clear in a reader, but should be reasonably strong and good in the dark. 2) No block format, should be able to copy the pages html, txt, html, whatever.

The Kindle 2 is now much better. In my opinion, the screen the Kindle 2 is the best among all e-book readers.
