Can I download books from Amazon Kindle Store rather than have them delivered wirelessly to my Kindle?

I'm about to go to the form of study abroad and I take my Kindle with me, you can download books and sync only my Kindle. I know that EVDO does not work outside the U.S.. If someone can help me do that, then please. Thank you for this time.
