Can I upload PDF Books to a new Kindle (3) without losing formatting?

I’m thinking about getting a brand new Kindle 3 this holiday season, but want to know if it’s possible to upload PDF books that I have previously downloaded/purchased. And if so, would the formatting of these documents be preserved when uploaded?
