Was it God or Satan that made King David to take a census and what happened to David’s free will?
“And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.” (2Samuel 24:1, KJV)
“And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.” (1Chronicles 21:1 KJV)
So which Bible passage is correct?
The Books of Samuel were written before the concept of Satan being the Evil Prince of Darkness was fully evolved. Chronicles was written much later during the Babylonian Captivity. In Babylon, the Hebrews were exposed to the religion of Zorastrianism. Zorastorians believed in a High Creator God, Ahura Mazda, who is all good and cannot consist of any evil. Opposing him is Ahriman, a powerful evil divine being. Good and evil will be in conflict until the end of the world when Ahriman will be vanquished.
Zorastorian had a huge effect on Judaism (and later Christianity). The Hebrews assimilated many Zorastorian concepts into their religion. It was during the Bablyonian Captivity, that Satan evolved into the Prince of Darkness, thus he was portrayed as such in Chronicles. Moreover, Yahweh evolved from being a tribal diety (capable of being both merciful and harsh – (or good or evil if you like), as shown in Samuel and in other early books of the Bible) to the cosmic beneficial God that He was potrayed in the later books in the Bible.
The Holy Bible (KJV) _ Jeremiah 7
